This is a valuable resource for anyone who spends time camping around Lake Tahoe. I was so pleased to receive a review copy and look forward to trip planning with this by my side. There are no maps but when I’m planning a trip, I find it convenient to have the book in front of me while I research the campground online so I can find maps and search for availability. Nearby restaurants, grocery stores and attractions are listed. I plan my first night’s elevation carefully to maximize acclimatization. For me, the elevation information is critically important as I am susceptible to altitude sickness above 10,000 feet if I don’t acclimate properly. At the beginning of each section, an overall description of the campground is provided with such information as whether reservations are taken, contact details, presence of bear boxes and flush toilets, whether dogs are allowed, number of campsites and whether cell service is available. There’s a handy index of campgrounds in the back while the table of contents lists the geographic area and a list of campgrounds in each. Many key attractions at Lake Tahoe, such as Emerald Bay, are within easy driving distance. Picturesque Fallen Leaf Lake is within easy walking distance. Campsites are in a mature forest of pine, fir, cedar, and aspen. There are a lot of campgrounds around Lake Tahoe and the thickness of the book reflects that at a hefty 650 pages. Fallen Leaf Campground is located a quarter mile from Fallen Leaf Lake and close to South Lake Tahoe. It’s also helpful that they give a realistic description of how many tents will fit and whether it’s better for tents or motorized vehicles. Privacy ratings are provided for the campsite as well as the driveway and the approximate length of the driveway is provided (very helpful for RVers). The descriptions of each site are rich in detail about what you’ll see from the site, whether it’s a road, grove of trees or river view. Compared to the peace of the backcountry, I am often dismayed by the lack of privacy in campgrounds so for me, this is the most valuable resource I have found to selecting a good site for the night before a backpacking trip. I found their other book, “ Eastern Sierra and Death Valley Camping with Privacy,” to be very helpful when planning backpacking trips for the Sierra Club or personal trips. With Lake Tahoe Camping With Privacy: Your Guide To The Most Private Campsites Near Tahoe, Truckee, Sly Park, Union Valley Reservoir, And Beyond, the Wilke’s have added to their collection of information about private campsites in the Sierra. (Weatherly told the Times that he didn’t push for Dushku to be fired, and Bull’s showrunner maintains that Dushku’s removal from the show was not “punitive.”)īecause there wasn’t a “safe person” with whom Dushku could file a harassment complaint, she had to go through shadowy back channels and handle everything herself. Not long after, Dushku was written off the show. Weatherly, in turn, immediately set a meeting with the president of CBS to talk about Duskhu’s “sense of humor,” per text messages obtained by the Times. She eventually talked to one of Bull’s producers about her concerns, and on his advice, she went to Weatherly and tried to flatter him into backing off. When there is no clear mechanism for reporting harassment, it will continue to flourishĭushku told CBS’s lawyers that she didn’t feel there was a “safe person you could go to” with sexual harassment complaints at the network. If the culture at a company is set by the person at the top, Moonves certainly would have been in a position to make sexual harassment seem both normal and accepted. It is worth recalling that the most powerful person at CBS at the time was Les Moonves, whom multiple women have accused of sexual harassment, dating back decades. (Weatherly maintains that when he suggested a threesome, he was ad-libbing a joke in character.) When he demonstrated that it was fine with him to harass one of his co-stars, everyone around him heard the message loud and clear. In Dushku’s case, on the set of Bull, Weatherly - who has worked at CBS for 15 years and is well-liked - was extremely powerful. The person at the top of a company determines what the workplace culture will look like. This is the kind of pattern that can enable a culture of corporate harassment, in miniature. She says that after Weatherly suggested in front of the crew that Dushku have a threesome with him and another cast member, a crew member came up to her, laughing, and said, “I’m with Bull.” Then he suggested that he would also not mind having a threesome with Dushku. When someone at the top makes it clear that sexual harassment is okay by him, those below him follow suitĪccording to Dushku, Weatherly’s behavior toward her seemed to give Bull crew members tacit permission to harass her. In a statement to the Times, CBS affirmed its commitment to “a culture defined by a safe, inclusive and respectful workplace,” but allowed that Dushku’s experience demonstrates that “our work is far from done.”Īpparently to that end, CBS asked a team of outside lawyers to investigate “cultural issues at all levels of CBS.” But the Times obtained a draft of their findings - and what it reports about the details of Dushku’s case suggest that a culture of sexual harassment is baked into CBS, on all levels. But then, the Times says, star Michael Weatherly made a series of off-color comments about her: commenting on her legs, making jokes about a threesome, remarking in front of the crew that he was going to spank her, inviting her into his “rape van.” ( In a statement to the Times, Weatherly says he was ad-libbing jokes about his lines in the script and is “mortified” to have offended Dushku.) After Dushku complained about Weatherly’s comments, plans to make her a regular on the show evaporated.ĬBS eventually paid Dushku a $9.5 million settlement, a sum the network says is roughly what she would have earned over the course of four seasons of Bull, had she become a series regular on the show. She guest-starred in three episodes, and according to documents obtained by the Times, there were plans to make her a series regular. The New York Times reports that this January, CBS paid out a major sexual harassment settlement to actress Eliza Dushku - and what the details of the case suggest about CBS’s culture are damning.ĭushku was reportedly harassed on the set of the CBS legal procedural Bull. Just a few months after CBS ousted its CEO, Les Moonves, following accusations of sexual harassment, the network is facing a new sexual harassment scandal. Not to say the puzzle feels overly simplistic it just doesn't require abstract thought to solve. The solution is so blatantly logical it's obscene. For example, early on, Kate needs to wake up a pilot who has fainted after his plane crashes on a snowy mountaintop. Even with some frustrations, the game does a pretty good job overall of integrating puzzles into the game world. The puzzles in Syberia II are a mixed bag of anything from flawlessly logical brain teasers to completely illogical brain roasters. When not rummaging through a hundred billion pixels to activate the aforementioned hot spots, chances are you'll be out solving puzzles. It is way too easy to completely miss an entire section of a restaurant, bar or what have you just because you don't hold title as the world's best hot spot hunter. Which brings up problem number one: unless you have super-vision, you'll either need cornea implants or your glasses cleaned and tweaked to find some of the more reclusive hot spots in this game. Usually, this means mousing over characters to initiate a conversation or scrolling over an item to pick it up. As in most games of this type, a bulk of the adventure will have you moving your cursor around the screen in search of hot spots. Now though, you only make a few phone calls that actually matter story-wise, making the phone feel more like a novelty than anything else. I really didn't mind the heavy cell use in the first game, as it sometimes provided bits of needed info on the story. She ends up hanging up on most of the calls she gets. The cell phone has taken a backseat in Syberia II, as Kate Walker has pretty much severed all connections with her former self. Fans of the original will remember getting tons of phone calls from Kate Walker's mother, boyfriend and boss. You control Kate Walker through a very simple interface made up of an inventory screen, a document screen, and of course, a slot for Kate's cell phone. Most previews of Syberia II mention the first few hours spent in the dreary town of Romansbourg, so I'll just skip past all that. Kate Walker forsakes family and career to head off into the frozen north in search of the old man's dream, even if she's still not too sure about it herself. She's now resolved to help Hans Voralberg reach the mythical island of Syberia. She disregards her boss's plea to have her return home to New York after she left for France on a business trip weeks earlier. The opening movie in Syberia II reveals Kate Walker letting go of her roots. It's ok if you don't know what I'm talking about, Syberia II graciously provides a bite-sized prologue for the Syberia virgins of the world through an optional cinematic. The trio soon boards a whimsical wind-up train and shoot into the frozen unknown in search of Syberia. Kate Walker meets and joins Oscar, a wimpy yet loyal automaton built by Hans, in a bid to realize the crazed dreams of the frail old man. The old man seemed deliriously obsessed with finding Syberia, a sacred island where Mammoths still freely roam. When gamers last saw Kate Walker, she had found the elusive Hans Voralberg, an aging toymaker who built advanced machines and automatons. Star-forming nebulae filled with hydrogen gas in deep space are often referred to as H-II regions. Given that hydrogen is by far the most common element (or molecule) in the universe, and since hydrogen nuclei are just single protons, then suffice it to say the science of protons can teach us much about the distribution of matter and the violent mechanisms that drive some of the most energetic phenomena in the cosmos. Robert Hofstadter, who was an American physicist who won the Nobel Prize for his work characterizing protons and neutrons, described this scale of 10^–15 meters as a 'femtometer', named after the famous physicist Enrico Fermi. Given that protons are subatomic particles at the very heart of an atom, they are therefore extremely small, measuring just hundreds of trillionths of a meter (10^–15 meters). Remove an electron from around an atom, however, and this upsets the balance between the cumulative charges of the electrons and the protons, and the atom becomes positively charged - an ion. Because their charges are equal, and because the other co-inhabitant of the atomic nucleus, the neutron, is neutral, then so long as the number of protons and electrons are equal then their charges cancel out and atoms are electrically neutral. This is the exact equal and opposite of the charge of an electron, which is - 1.602192 x 10^-19 coulombs. The elementary charge of the proton is 1.602192 x 10^–19 coulombs (C). Only quarks have a smaller charge, being a third or two-thirds of the elementary charge. It is the basic unit of charge against which all other charges are measured. What is the charge of a proton?Ī proton has what is called an " elementary charge ", or "e" in shorthand. Today we know that protons (and neutrons) are formed from even smaller particles, quarks, and that the nucleus of an atom is made from protons and neutrons (with the exception of the basic form of hydrogen, which has no neutrons). He called the hydrogen nucleus a proton, meaning "first" in Greek because Rutherford saw it as the first building block for all atoms. Various experiments, including some performed by Rutherford, showed that hydrogen nuclei could come out of other elements, and by 1920 Rutherford had figured that hydrogen nuclei must be the basic building block of all atomic nuclei since hydrogen is the lightest element. In the gold leaf experiment, the deflected alpha particles were encountering this nucleus. This model, albeit simplified because it doesn't incorporate the quantum mechanical behavior of the electrons, is referred to as the Bohr model after Niels Bohr, who along with Rutherford put all the pieces together. This convinced Rutherford that atoms actually consisted of a tiny, tight nucleus surrounded by empty space with electrons orbiting around the nucleus at a distance. That could only happen if there were a knot of electric charge at the center of an atom, rather than being spread out as in the plum pudding model. Instead, Geiger and Marsden found in their experiment that sometimes the alpha particles were deflected at large angles, or even bounced straight back. Typically a section of airspace covering a very broad region around your location is usually displayed first. In order to give yourself an overview and familiarise yourself with navigating around the map, you should first of all resize your chosen map area. Eventually you will be able to navigate through the programme confidently and without even thinking about it. There are nevertheless various tools for controlling the map, which you should familiarise yourself with step by step. Using Flightradar24 is comparatively simple. If you’re ready, you can start tracking flights straight away. The region displayed varies based on the map area setting. What initially looks like a disorderly and chaotic ant colony is actually the current air traffic over Europe, Germany or America. If all of these requirements are met, upon opening the website you will be greeted by a map area with a multitude of yellow symbols, each of which represents an aircraft in flight. The only requirement is having Java and Flash activated on your browser, as these are required in order to display the interactive map. The website can be viewed on a PC or laptop, or just as easily on a tablet or smartphone – a dedicated App is available for mobile devices. If you want to access the data provided by Flightradar24, then all that you require is an internet connection and a device on which to view the data. All recorded aircraft movements are visualised on a map. The result, however, is very similar, which is why the name Flightradar24 is ultimately still suitable. This means that machines which do not emit any signals can also be detected. Radar is usually used by airports and military reconnaissance facilities to actively detect flying objects. Nevertheless, the name is a little misleading, as the technology used has very little in common with a radar in the conventional sense of the word. The incoming information was uploaded directly to the internet and visualised on the Flightradar24 website. This granted them access to the unencrypted data sent by a large number of planes. In 2006, the founders of Flightradar24 began to set up ADS-B receivers in Europe, and later all over the world. Realising their plan sounds simple, but required a considerable amount of effort. |
